To Sebastian:

If you read this one day, I didn’t make it. I did it to save your life. Had no other choice.

Love you forever,

Mom

He stared at the piece of paper, reading it over and over. “So they killed her,” he said eventually, still staring at the piece of paper.

“I feared the worst. I asked around if somebody knew what happened to your mother, but nothing. She just disappeared.” Then, barely audible, she said, “Like anyone else who tried to go against them.”

“I see it’s the same Egor Petrov who’s running for president.”

She looked away, angry with herself for letting it slip.

“And my father, I don’t see anything.”

“I don’t know anything about your father,” she said, glancing down at her busy hands. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner – you’re like a son to me. I was afraid I might lose you. That you might go off and do something stupid, like take on the Petrovs.”

Sebastian stood up and gazed out the bedroom window, his fingers tapping the side of his leg.

Aunt Josephine detected the turmoil within him.

“Everyone is born neither bad, nor good, Sebastian. God will never make it that easy for us. It’s a choice, helped on by the circumstances we find ourselves in, and most important of all, the people we choose to dance with. It’s a balancing act, walking a line. Hatred and vengeance are the building blocks toward a life of sadness ... and darkness. You’ve got a pure heart, I know, you can’t hurt a fly.”

Sebastian raised a brow as she said the last sentence, still staring out the window. “What if you are born a vulture, and you need to kill for your own survival? It’s your nature.” He turned, now staring at the old woman. “Is that okay, or did God play a cruel joke on you.”

Aunt Josephine shook her head, not understanding, taken aback by his response. “For an animal, if it’s his nature, and if he must kill for his own survival, I guess it’s acceptable because God made it that way. But that’s what makes us different from animals, we’ve got a choice.”

“Lately it gets harder and harder to separate the animals from the humans.”

“Don’t go after this man, please, I beg you. You might just lose yourself in their world.”

“So, you want them to get away with it?”

“No, I don’t want you to get hurt. You’re only one man. What can you do?”

“Sebastian Richards,” he said softly to himself.

“What’s that?” she leaned forward in the chair.

“Nothing.” He turned for the door. “Don’t worry; I’m not going to do something stupid.”

“What happened to your cheek?” she said, referring to the plaster, really just trying to find a reason to keep him talking to her.

“An experiment. See you downstairs, Aunt Josephine.”

Sebastian ran down to the bathroom and closed the door behind him.

“Sebastian Richards,” he said, staring at himself in the mirror. He opened the tap and filled the basin to the top.

“Richards,” he muttered as he ripped the plaster from his cheek and submerged his face in the cold water for a few moments.
